Dear Patient,
Smear test – it could save your life
We wish to remind you that your cervical screening test is now overdue. This routine smear can be performed by one of our Practice Nurses in the surgery by appointment.
The reason for this reminder is that screening allows us to detect and treat small changes before they develop into cancer. By attending for screening you are significantly reducing your risk of developing cervical cancer.
All our practice nurses are fully trained to a high standard to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The equipment we now use is all the disposable and the sample sent to the laboratory uses the latest technology. The number of inadequate samples has reduced dramatically which means far less women are requiring a retest.
The time between having a test and receiving the result has also greatly improved and all women should now receive their result in writing within 2 weeks. Should you have any concerns around screening, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery and request an appointment with the Nurse to discuss this.
We understand it is your choice if you do not wish to participate in the screening programme but it is known to save lives and we hope you decide to have the screening.
